Chapter Six

The palace was far larger than Alora had ever thought it to be. Not that she’d ever seen it. But still. It wasn’t hard to conjure the idea of a palace, and yet, as she turned down another hall, Alora found herself shaking her head at how grand it all was.

There was a library that held more books than she could ever count. A servant working to dust them all off happily helped her, telling her about stories she’d never heard of. As she would offer up a new title, Alora would nod and add it to the stack. How had she never known so many different stories could exist? It would certainly fill her time.

A servant had carried a few books back to the room she was staying in—the king’s bedchamber. That left her to keep looking around, finding her way to a large gallery filled with different art. Statues carved of the purest marble, paintings done in a steady hand portraying the king and what had to be other royals. She stopped and stared at each thing, trying to see the meaning the artist was trying to convey, feel the emotions lying beneath the surface.

Everyone knew who she was, and as they looked to her with hope in their eyes, Alora wondered just how important this whole thing was. They definitely knew about the arrangement, and the weight of whatever she had to do was pulling her down. She needed to get to a room away from their prying gazes and calm herself. It didn’t matter if they knew; it wasn’t like she was doing something terrible.

As the sun sank, and the golden beams of light disappeared, overtaken by dim sconces with flames lit by the servants passing, Alora brought herself back to Arryn’s room. She hadn’t realized just how far away she’d gotten until she finally found the doors once more.

Arryn was there, pacing from the little table still set up near the doors and all the way to the grand windows, curtains thrown back to reveal a gorgeous garden topiary maze just away from the palace. The dim evening light bathed over him, making him seem taller, broader as he went. She shut the door through which she’d entered, a soft click lifting on the air.

When he turned to come back towards the door, he paused, gaze on her. Whatever was bothering him moments before seemed to fade away as he relaxed. He shifted on his feet, a smirk on his lips.

Alora leaned against the door, ready to finish what they’d started. She took a step towards him.

“I’ve had your sister sent after,” he said quietly.

She stopped for the briefest second, but continued walking to him with her gaze intent on him. “That was kind.” It was, but they could talk about that later. They had been interrupted last night, and Alora couldn’t deny that she had been imagining just how wonderful he might taste, just how wonderful he had made her feel.

His dark eyes studied her as she stopped just before him, just out of reach.
